The Splendor and the Sublime
Masterpieces from the Bob Jones University Museum & Gallery

Guido Reni

A new style emerged in the 17th century as artists ushered in a fresh aesthetic comprised of naturalistic portrayals blended with illusory Tenebrism. The artistic depictions of sacred themes aided in conveying the splendor of the divine. Characterized by a dramatic style and composition, paintings during the Baroque period emphasized the civic and political authority sought by the Roman Catholic Church. Canvases filled with allegories, martyrdoms, and religious propaganda assisted in furthering the influence and prestige of the Church and its control over public opinion. Selected for a European tour, The Splendor and the Sublime features approximately 50 monumental works that capture the dynamic nature inherent to the time. Although developed at different times throughout Europe, the Baroque is represented by artists from Italy, France, Spain, and the Netherlands. The show includes masterpieces from Peter Paul Rubens, Charles Le Brun, Guido Reni, Bartolomé Murillo, and Il Guercino among others. The rich heritage of religious spectacle and theatricality so prevalent through the 17th century is skillfully captured by careful depictions of space and movement interspersed with sensual emotion and visceral appeal.
