The Angel and the Rose
Spanish Colonial Art from Peru

Before the Spanish invasion, the Inca Empire dominated from the Pacific Ocean to the sources of the Paraguay and Amazon rivers. The Inca emperor was divine; the men were warriors; and their land was rich in gold and silver. A catastrophic change came to the Incans when in1532, the Spanish landed in Peru and conquered the Inca empire. The Spanish soon built the "City of the Kings," present known as Lima, and established the first Viceroyalty in "New Spain." The viceroyalty lasted for three centuries. The Peruvian Schools of art during the Viceroyalty were a dramatic encounter of two different cultures; an amalgam of the indigenous Indian background and the European art forms of the high Renaissance and Italian Baroque. New schools of Viceregal Mestizo art were created from this grand cultural fusion resulting in one of the most glorious expressions of painting ever known.

Its virulence was such that the paper's editorial board deemed it necessary to introduce it by way of warning their readers: "M. Marinetti...has just founded the School of 'Futurism' whose theories surpass in daring all those expounded by other schools, earlier and contemporary alike!"
