Hopi Potters- Allen True

Allen True's West
American Illustration, Fine Art, and Murals

Allen True was raised and educated in Denver and there gained profound inspiration from his western roots. When, in his early twenties, he discovered a penchant for his art, his family enrolled him in the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C. From there he gained admission to the country's most eminent academy for budding illustrators, Howard Pyle's school in Wilmington.

This exhibition focuses on three unique aspects of Allen True's work: his illustrations, fine art, and murals. The Denver Public Library's section of the exhibition focuses on True's illustrations. Over the course of the first decade of the 20th century, True illustrated many magazine articles and books. He worked beside authors like Emerson Hough and John Neilhardt. The Denver Art Museum has chosen for its portion of the exhibition to focus on the middle phase of True's work, selecting oil paintings to reveal his stylistic development over a decade of work as a fine artist who produced oils for private sale. Finally, the Colorado Historical Society will present True's work as a muralist. As the artist's longest period, spanning the years from 1914 to early 1950, True's work as a muralist was highly respected and extremely varied.
