A Perfect Measure
The Golden Mean in Contemporary Art

For the last two millennia, the Golden Mean has graced artists' canvases, architectural structures, and the pages of scholarly journals. It is a "mathmatical system of proportion deriving from the pentagon that underlies organic life and natural patters of order." It is found when a line is divided into two unequal parts so that the shorter part relates in length to the longer as the longer relates to the whole. It provides a design element that unifies an entire composition which is rendered in two or three dimensions. A sought-after phenomenon by mathematicians, scientists, and artists alike, this ration is found in both the natural and man-made worlds.
